State Championship recap

On a sun-splashed Saturday afternoon in Newton, the Clifton/Clyde Eagles and B&B Baileyville Falcons met up for the 8 Man Divsion 1 State Championship. These two teams from the Twin Valley League slugged it out from start to finish, with Baileyville coming out on top, 24-16.

The Eagles were ultimately undone by 2 mistakes and 10 penalties. The Falcons got on the board first when Clifton/Clyde Punter Zach Cyphers saw a snap go over his head and out of bounds. On the ensuing kickoff, Drew Huerter raced 55 yards to paydirt to put Baileyville up 10-0. The Eagles wouldn't get settled down until Drew Deaver picked off Kyle Haverkamp. The Eagles took the momentum into the locker room at half time, getting a Deaver toughdown run and stop on defense before the break.

The second half saw each team's defense rise to the task, but the Eagles had one final shot. Facing 4th and 8 from the Baileyville 38 yard line, the Eagles committed 3 straight false start penalties, digging a hole from which they couldn't recover.

The Eagles wrap up their season 11-2, with their only losses coming to the 2 teams who won State Championships in 8 man play. Congrats to Clifton/Clyde on another terrific season!

Game of the year... in a loss

Hats off to the Pike Valley Panthers, who lost in the first round of the 8 man playoffs to 9-0 Quinter, 38-34. Derek Barrett had a monster game, carrying the football 46 times for 262 yards and 4 tds. Dylan Cross gave the Panthers their final lead of the game with a 23 yard end around at 2:57, which proved to be long enough for the Bulldogs. After an Alex Howard sack, Quinter QB Ed Machen found Matt Bird in the right flat, who latteraled to RB Jordon Harggitt, who raced 65 yards down the sideline for the go-ahead score. Pike Valley was only able to drive to midfield, but Lane Koster's pass on 4th down came up short of Barrett.

Again, it was a fantastic game to cover. No one thought PV would even be playing into the second half, let alone have the lead and a chance to win in the 4th. Great job Panthers!
