Bowl picks...

After a little thought, and realizing that I won't be on air for a few days with the New Year's holiday, here's some of my picks for the upcoming bowl games. Laugh all you want...
Wednesday, December 30

Bowling Green
Idaho

Take: Freddie Barnes, who is 4 catches from the NCAA single season record, and Urban Meyer's first head coaching gig, the Bowling Green Falcons. Watch for: North Platte, NE native Nathan Enderle direct a Vandal offense that sorely missed him in a few games down the stretch. Nebraska fans will weep after watching Enderle, then remember Zac Lee is the QB for the Huskers.

20 Arizona
22 Nebraska

Take: Ndamukong Suh leads the Best NU defense since...99? It feels that way, after NU came up one second short of beating Texas in the Big 12 championship. Watch for: A defensive struggle in which the first team to give up a special teams play will lose.

Thursday, December 31

11 Virginia Tech
Tennessee

Take: Va Tech's defense can flat frustrate any offense, and that's not Peyton Manning taking snaps for the Vols. Watch for: Intriguing match up between Vols D coordinator Monte Kiffin and Hokie QB Tyrod Taylor

Oklahoma
21 Stanford

Take: A p*&%% off OU team that will not have to face Stanford QB Andrew Luck. Watch for: Toby Gerhart was your Heisman runner up, dude can flat truck it.

Houston
Air Force

Take: Case Keenum in the new Run N Shoot for Houston. Watch for: Never, EVER, count out a service academy in a bowl game.

Navy
Missouri

Take: Blaine Gabbert and MU to put a ton of passing yards and points on the board. Watch for: I'm serious, never, EVER, count out a service academy in a bowl game.

Minnesota
Iowa State

Take: ISU and first year coach Paul Rhodes. ISU could start throwing monkey wrenches in the Big 12 North very soon (see: 8 forced turnovers vs Nebraska) Watch for: An ISU team that jumped Mizzou in the Big 12 bowl selection order...

And now, New Year's day and the weekend picks...

Tailgate Party

The start of school brings us closer to the fall sports seasons. Practices are well underway, and the kids are working hard. it's time to invite everyone to the county wide tailgate party at the Courthouse lawn this Friday, August 28 from 5:30-7 pm. Students in Jersey's eat free, Parents in School colors eat for $1, and everyone else for $2. the booster Club will also be selling memberships. See you Friday!

Back in Manhattan

Ian finally got some time Sunday morning to give us the inside on the start of fall camp for the KSU Wildcats...

We moved into the dorms on Wednesday and had our conditioning test on Thursday. For the conditioning test we had to run two 300 yard shuttles (which are 60 yards, down and back 5 times) in an average time of 46 seconds with only a minute and a half in between each one. Not trying to boast, but I had the third fastest defensive backs time out of 14 guys.haha. We have had only 3 practices so far but according to coach Snyder, we have improved each day. Yesterday was pretty rough considering we practiced from 4-7 with a heat index of 105 degrees, and "Be Tough" is one of our 16 goals for success, and I think its safe to say we displayed that. lol. But if you have any questions, just send me back a message and I'll answer back as soon as I can.

So what say you? Any questions you'd like to hear of from the "inside?"

A word from Ian Peters

Big news from former Pike Valley Panther Ian Peters. He's been invited to K State's Fall Camp, of which teams can only bring 105 players. 85 of those are on scholarship, so Ian's got his work cut out for him. Here's the message I got...

Hey man. I found out last Wednesday that I am going to fall camp. We check in tomorrow August 5th. I have no idea whats in store, lol. Im pumped that I get to go though, considering they don't take everyone. Im not sure how long that excitement will last, because from what I hear its 2 and a half weeks of absolute hell. But I suppose that's the price you pay if you want to reach the high mark coach Snyder sets for us. I'll try to keep you posted as often as possible, but i really don't know how much free time i'll have. They said last year it was EVERY day, even saturdays and sundays, all day long. But if nothing else i'll get you informed once were done on the 22nd.

I can't claim to be a Cat by any means, but i find the walk on story a great one every time. Go Ian!!!

Pee Wee District Baseball

Just got the First Round schedule for the Belleville Pee Wee district games in Linn next week (july 13-16)

Congrats to the Republic County volleyball teams, both varsity and JV, who recently completed perfect seasons in the Washington Co. summer league. The varsity went 10-0, while the JV posted a record of 5-0. Can't wait for fall!

Entries are due to Stephanie by May 30th, with a short meeting May 31st at the courts. Entries and any questions about the league should be directed to Stephanie, by calling 527-0059!

Meanwhile, back in Manhattan

I talked with Ian Peters, 2008 PV grad and KSU football walkon. The Wildcats will have their spring game this Saturday, May 2.

Practices have been going real well for the team these last few weeks. We've had our bad spots and our missed assignments here and there, but that is expected, and we feel as though we are heading in the right direction as a team. The coaching staff and players have really started meshing and trusting in each other, and started giving the complex a new feeling of a Family. Everyone is starting to realize their personal roles, and where they can contribute the most in every aspect of the game. Not one position is overlooked or ignored at any time during Spring practice. We are expected to perform at our very best every day, with no excuses. We will definetly be a well conditioned football team. Thanks for the support and God Bless.

An interview with Ian, as well as Arizona WBB signee (and former lady Buff) Amanda Pierson forthcoming after finals wind down.

Softball update!!!

Pierson signs with 'Zona

On official signing day across the nation, Republic County High School graduate Amanda Pierson signed her name to an official Letter of Intent for a full ride scholarship to play for the Division One, University of Arizona where she will play for former University of Tennessee National Champion Niya Butts. Pierson will join the Wildcats after a memorable career at Seward County where she finished fourth all-time in career blocked shots (136) and holds 6th and 8th place on the single season blocked shots list (82 & 54). She averaged 12 points and 6 rebounds a game for the Lady Saints in 2009 and was a 2nd Team All-Jayhawk West All-Conference pick as a sophomore.

At a press conference in Liberal on April 15th Pierson commented, “It just felt right; they are graduating all of their post players so I should have a chance to go in and compete for playing time next season. The people in Liberal have given me so much support in my two years here, it has led me to the success which has made it possible for me to sign at the University of Arizona.” She also strongly considered the University of Texas-Arlington and Colorado State University before signing with Arizona. Amanda is the daughter of Rick and Melinda Pierson of Munden.

Catching up on recaps

My apologies for not having the blog updated like i should. It's been kinda crazy this week...

Tuesday, March 3
2A Girls Substate first round in Salina

Rep County.....7..15...5..24..5...56

RC: Shoemaker 3, Cromwell 6, Wollenberg 2, Hadachek 12, Duensing 7, Beneda 14, Cottonmyre 2, Jones 10

The Lady Buffs finish their season in heartbreaking fashion, falling to league-rival Sacred Heart. The fourth quarter scoring says a lot about the way these girls fought, and had a chance to win in the final 30 seconds, but couldn't get off a clean shot. RC finishes 8-13 on the year, and will return all but 3 graduating seniors. Danielle Cromwell, Jessica Wollenberg and Hillary Woods will be greatly missed next year.

Thursday, March 5

PV: Loring 18, Vignery 2, Mahin 2, Avrie Gritten 2, Audrey Gritten 4, Peters 20, Freed 12, Housholder 5

The Pike Valley girls forced 29 Elwood turnovers, and turned most of those into transition baskets, and cruise into the Substate Championship game Saturday vs Frankfort.

Great intensity from the guys right out of the locker put the young Lions in their place. The Buffs play Sacred Heart for the 3rd straight year in substate. The Buffs won a semifinal match up 2 years ago in Phillipsburg, while the Knights won in Norton in 2008 in the championship game.

RC vs Ell-Saline

The guys let the Cardinals get out to a 6-2 lead in the 1st quarter, but when the dust settled, RC had a 33 point win in the opening round of substate play. RC will host Minneapolis on Thursday night at 7:30 pm. Sacred Heart will play Solomon at 6pm at RCHS.

Checking in with Ian

Checking up on Ian Peters, Pike Valley grad and KSU football walk on. I asked Ian what the off season has been like so far with Coach Snyder...

We have lifting and running Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Each lasting about 2 hours. They have designated times for lifting so it fits into your schedule. After running we have 7 on 7 without coaches. On Tuesday's and Thursday's we have position meetings that last anywhere from an hour to an hour and a half. We also have to get 8 hours of what is called "study table",basically just time for us to study at Vanier, which has to be completed between Sunday and Thursday. Personally, as well as a majority of the guys, lift at 6 a.m. because of classes during the day. Coaches are great, and really seem to know there stuff, but i guess thats kind of an obvious statement. Coach Bill Snyder is very inspirational, and is always challenging not only us to be the best we can be, but himself and the coaching staff everyday as well. There's always room for improvement, and I couldn't agree more. I just look at what the man's done and he knows what it takes
.

Check back for more updates from Ian throughout the spring!

RC at Clay Center

Fantastic game for the Lady Buffs (6-10), who knocked off a salty Clay Center (8-8) team on the road. Late baskets from Jessica Wollenberg, Lacie Shoemaker, and 2 free throws from Celsey Beneda with :07 left proves to be the difference, 55-51 for the good girls.

The newest Cat

Some of you heard last week, the big news that former Pike Valley Panthers Ian Peters has been accepted as a walk-on as part of the Kansas State football team. What a tremendous honor for Ian, and a great source of pride for everyone in our communities. While he was listed as a new recruit for Coach Snyder, I know ian's excited to get to work. Winter conditioning began Feb 2! Here's what ian had to say when i asked him what he's feeling...

"I guess to start things off I owe a lot of thank-yous to a lot of people. There is too many to name off. My family and virtually the entire community have supported me all through high school, and even after; however, my biggest thank you goes out to God. He not only blessed me with the support of a loving family and community, but placing me in the right spot at the right time. I truly and sincerely appreciate everyone's congratulations and support, and want to take this time to say...thank you everyone."

I'll try to get some updates from Ian for you die-hard Catbackers. There's hope anew with Coach Snyder back, and with Ian, the Cat's chances at victory just went up! Congrats Ian, we're so proud!
