Former Lady Buff earns Acedemic award

The Big Sky Conference announced the 2011 Spring All-Academic teams, which featured 41 student-athletes from men's and women's track and field, men's and women's tennis and women's golf.

Karen Brown of Republic, KS, earned academic recognition from the Conference for the Bobcats. As Karen enters her senior year, Coach Mike Carignan awarded her a partial athletic scholarship for her final year of competition with the Montana State track & field team. In her 2 seasons with the Bobcats Karen has qualified for the Big Sky conference meet in the javelin. In 2010 Karen finished 10th at conference and this year she posted a 13th place throw.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must have participated in at least half of the team's competitions, achieved a 3.2 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at the close of the most recent academic term and completed at least one academic term at his or her current Big Sky institution.

In addition to this year’s athletic scholarship, the college of Health & Human Performance awarded Karen a student success academic scholarship.
Karen graduated from Republic County High School in 2007 where she competed in cross country, basketball, and track. She is the daughter of Mark & Loisann Brown of Republic, and the granddaughter of Glenna Brown and Iona Tuley.

Blake Swihart, c, Cleveland HS (NM)

Cleveland High School baseball star Blake Swihart got a last minute call from the Boston Red Sox, one minute before the signing deadline.

The Red Sox convinced Swihart to come play professional baseball for their organization rather than attend the University of Texas.

It took a $2.5 million signing bonus to help convince him, but it worked.

"That's life changing money," said Swihart.

The Red Sox drafted the switch hitting catcher in the first round. He wanted to play for his dream school in Austin but said the money was too good to pass up.

Swihart now leaves for Fort Myers, Florida to begin his pro career.

Blake's dad Arlen was a graduate of Concordia High School, and then went on to play basketball at Cloud County Community College.
