Lady Buffs Softball

Last week the Lady Buffs played a pair of Double Headers against two 4A schools.  We are never shy about playing tough competition early and we know to compete we have to play our best.  It puts us behind the 8-ball sometimes because we start the season with a strong schedule but in the end we use the experience to our advantage.  This week on Tuesday, we play Concordia and had to go there without our starting Catcher Miranda Cottenmyre and baserunner Madison Waite.  Kelby Johnson saw her first game behind the plate and that is never an easy thing to do.  I was pleased with her for her first time and expect her to only get better with each outing.  In the circle, Kayla Sly and Joni Sheets are still improving and will get better as the year goes on.  We expect good things from them.  From the Plate Michelle Cottenmyre stepped up and lead the team going 2-3 on the night.  The games didn’t end as we would have liked but we did a lot of little things well- we just hurt ourselves with errors when we really needed to end an inning.

Chapman was played on Thursday and again we struggled finding the 3rd out of innings allowing them to have big innings.  Joni Sheets came in to help out in game one and pitched the entire 2nd game.  It was good she had the opportunity to see she could come in and throw as many pitches as she did.  Errors again really hurt us when we didn’t need them to.  With 2 outs Chapman score 12 runs in the first inning of game one to put a damper on things.  In game two a 5 run third inning with 2 outs is what started the down hill slide.  All in all we are improving and getting to a point where we feel if we can put things together you will see things happen on the good side for us.  Miranda Cottenmyre is playing through some injuries and helped us from the plate as she had all year.  She is batting 857 on the year and that is very good.

Over the last 4 games we have increased our batting average as a team over 20 points and if continue to do that good things will happen.  From the circle as a pitching staff we have cut walks down as well.  A walk is a run in most cases, so we need to continue the work we are doing from there.  We are excited about the games here on out as we get into schools our size and we will be able to see exactly where we are and where we need to go.

RC Softball drops 2 vs Russell

Russell Games

Game 1-  Russell wins 17-4

Kayla Sly started in the circle for the Lady Buff and pitched well.  We struggled in the second inning because of errors but we are young and it is going to happen that way sometimes.   Defensively, Michelle Cottenmyer comes to play and if you haven’t heard of her you will.  She is playing as well as anyone out there and giving it her all.  Brianna Long from the plate was 1 for 1 with a walk so 1000 percent which is perfect.  Kelby Johnson had a double to show off her power.

Game 2-  Russell wins 22-7

Joni Sheets was in the circle.  We scored 7 runs to show that we are able to generate runs we just have to be patient at the plate and drive our pitches.  Kelby once again showed her power with a double and Brianna continued having success getting on base.  She scored 2 of the 7 runs.

Night cap

Pitching was better tonight as Kayla and Joni are going to improve each night out.  They realize it will take time and they are working hard to get were we need them to be.  I was pleased with their efforts in the circle and once they become more consistent their confidence will build as well.  Defensively I can not say enough about Michelle.  She is diving all over the place coming up with big stops and her arm is a cannon.  She has thrown several people out because they just don’t expect her to bring it as hard as she can.  Danielle Roush is having to catch both games for the Lady Buffs and that is tougher than people realize.  She is doing well and will improve their as well once her legs build up in strength from having to sit like that.  She has a good arm and we will catch people off guard.  From the plate, Cassidy Stenson lead the Lady buffs with a .400 batting avg- cant ask for better than that out of a sophomore getting her first Varsity experience.  Kelby Johnson was .333 but with her 2 doubles had a slugging percentage of .667.  Brianna Long might not be the most power hitter but she finds ways to get on base and anyone who has watched Moneyball understands that importance.  She had a .600 on base percentage.  We have a lot of good things happening and once we iron out some little errors and communication items we will be ready for whomever comes our way.  It is a team effort and I am proud of the girls for understanding that and working together.

Next games are Thursday            April 12 in Concordia       4:30 Start time
April 19th in Chapman     4:30 Start time

Next Home game                            May 1st vs Minneapolis  4:30 Start Time- bring the noise (Barn Yard Welcome)

Cloudy and cool to start the season, the varsity linksters teed it up in Washington on Tuesday, April 3.  Blake Porter's 77 lead the way, good for a 6th place medal after a playoff loss for 5th.  Kalen Cromwell and Seth Hiatt each shot 86 to tie for 12 and Devyn Bebermeyer fired 88 for a 4 man total of 337.  The team score finished 3rd, behind 4A Holton (285) and 3A Nemaha Valley (332).  Other scores for RC were Trevor Allen with 92 and Gary Hadachek with 96.  Kellin Brandt of Holton was the tournament medalist with a -6 66 on the day!

Lady Buffs Softball falls to SES

Game 1

SES 18
RCHS 0

Opening our season with a loss was not the way the Lady Buffs wanted to start, but you have to start somewhere.  Kayla Sly started her pitching career tonight and as every young pitcher does, put herself into some tough situations.  It is very important to be aggressive and throw strikes to the lead off hitter so it doesn’t put pressure on the defense to have to think about situation.  Each inning we let the lead batter get on base (except the 4th inning) and that means right off we now worry about how we are going to try and get two people out when we should just focus on the situation.  First set of games out are very tough when you are young team trying to see where we fit in.  SES is a very good program and well coached.  From the plate we struggled because Conley is a very good pitcher and she was able to pitch from a lead right off the bat.  Miranda Cottenmyer got the only hit in the game and we were not able to score her.  I am sure to the girls it was frustrating but we move on.

Game 2

SES 16
RCHS 1

Each night out we play double headers and after taking a loss like we did, it is hard to put it out of your mind.  Joni Sheets was pitching in her first High School game and started off good.  Once again the lead off batter was on base everytime putting a lot of stress on our defense to make plays.  We have to get to where we are throwing a lot of strikes and let the defense play behind us and we will- it will just take time.  Defensively we are making errors that we need to eliminate to take the pressure of our pitcher, so as a team we need to help each other out.  From the plate, we got more aggressive and that is good to see.  Early season is about getting back at it and swing the bat.  Pitchers you face in High School are not going to walk you- they are throwing a lot of strikes and we have to understand that and use it to our advantage.

Even though in the two loss, it looks like nothing well happen, that is not the case.  Michelle Cottenmyer has made herself known and will be a great short stop or 3 rd base person.  I was encouraged to see the young hitters staying in there and getting their cuts against a very good pitcher.  With Miranda Cottenmyer getting injuried we have to find a replacement and Danielle Roush did a good job.  Miranda will be missed but these things happen and we move forward and not worry about yesterday but about tomorrow.  I know early season is going to be tough and we could take a couple of bad beats but the end of the season is when we need to be on top of our game.

Next games are at home on Thursday at 4:45 start time with the second game to follow.  Marysville will bring a young but very talented group over.  Seeing Marysville now will give us a good idea of where we need to be a regional time as they will be one of the top teams there.  We will continue to improve each day and see where we end up
